Understanding your skin tone and finding the right foundation color is crucial for a flawless look. Wearing the wrong shade can throw off your entire makeup and make it look uneven. But don't worry—I've got some simple tips to help you figure out your skin tone and choose the perfect foundation.

Based on my experience working with different skin tones, there are four main categories: warm, cool, olive, and neutral. Each category can range from very fair to very deep. Here's a quick overview of each:

  • Warm: These tones have more yellow, giving a golden glow with a touch of red. Gold jewelry complements this tone.

  • Cool: Cool tones have more red with a hint of blue, resulting in a rosy hue. Silver or rose gold jewelry works well with this tone.

  • Olive: Olive tones lack the red found in other tones, creating an olive shade with yellow and blue tones. Silver jewelry suits this tone.

  • Neutral: Neutral tones have a balanced mix of yellow, blue, and red, making them difficult to categorize. Most colors flatter this tone, and any metallic jewelry looks great.

Now, here's how to find your perfect foundation color:

  1. Find your light: Stand in front of a window with indirect natural light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can wash out your skin tones. Neutral-colored clothing helps avoid color casts.

  2. Ignore your face: Look at the tones in your neck, chest, and arms for an accurate assessment, as facial skin tone deviations can be misleading.

  3. Determine your shade: Consider your preference for a tan or fair look. Choose a shade that matches the medium between the darkest and lightest areas of your body, or closer to your neck if it's significantly lighter or darker.

  4. Swatch the shades: Test at least three different tones on your lower cheek, jaw, and neck. Wait for them to dry down and oxidize to see the true shade.

  5. Make your choice: Choose the shade that blends seamlessly into your skin without obvious blending. Avoid shades that look bruised, orange, or leave a gray cast.

Finding your perfect foundation shade should now be a breeze!
