As a makeup artist, I feel that setting & sealing sprays make a big difference in the longevity of makeup. Some makeup artists dislike setting & sealing sprays, and some swear by them. I'd be in the latter group.
So what is the difference between setting and sealing sprays?
A sealing spray is a liquid mist that protects the makeup under conditions in which the client would be perspiring. So, for example, a sealing spray would be best to use under theatrical lighting, on a photo shoot on a 90-degree day in Hawaii, or on a bride during a sweltering hot summer. A sealant is also great if you lay makeup products over one another without transferring or absorbing the other colors you have previously applied. A sealant also helps protect makeup from transferring to clothing or masks.
A setting spray is a liquid mist used to increase the longevity of your makeup look and help prevent smudging or fading.
With most clients, I use just a setting spray. Depending on the event, I will spray it at the end of the makeup session or between each makeup step.
The only time I use a setting and sealing spray is either in the heavy heat of the summer or when I am doing makeup for an entertainer who will be under harsh, hot lighting.
My top three setting/sealing sprays are as follows;
Lowers the temperature of the makeup to keep it from fading, cracking, or smudging. It is oil-free and great for any skin type.
I love using this on my brides! It is oil and paraben-free, hypoallergenic, and prevents fading and makeup from shifting.
Final Seal is used by Disney Princesses, Broadway performers, and more. It is alcohol-based which allows for extended wear and reduces the effects of oils and perspiration on the skin. It dries quickly to a matte, smudge-proof finish. Final Seal is a must for my clients and brides during the muggy, humid DC summers.
